mountain biking

A Bhutan bicycle tour is a true adventure, reflecting the ups and downs of life itself. Cycling is fairly new to Bhutan, with the first mountain biking shop opening in 2002, yet the country has quickly become a premier destination. Riders experience the twists and turns of narrow mountain trails, deep ravines, and high Himalayan passes, surrounded by prayer flags, diverse birds, wildlife, and the charm of local people. Depending on the route, cyclists traverse low foothills, higher valleys, and the lofty Himalayas, with every turn revealing breathtaking views. The best seasons for biking are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). Bhutan also hosts the Tour of the Dragon, one of the world’s most grueling one-day races—268 kilometers across four high mountain passes, from central Bumthang to western Thimphu. The race climbs from 1,200m to 3,340m, gaining 3,790m and descending 3,950m, making it longer and tougher than even Europe’s Paris Roubaix. Conceived by His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel U. Wangchuck, a leading biking enthusiast, the event is held every September, combining pristine natural beauty with extreme physical challenge
